Engine oil leak, please help

Post by avro »

I have a 82 westfalia diesel 1.6 litre
It leaks oil while running only. Where are the most common places for oil leaks on these?, and what is the best way to fix?

in my experience most common would be valve cover gasket, o-ring at base of vacuum pump, possibly crankshaft seal (front or rear), and intermediate shaft seal. First two are not hard to fix, front crank seal and intermediate shaft seal take a bit more work. Rear crank seal requires pulling the engine or transmission (not sure on the Vanagon). I also had an oil leak at the head gasket which is also not too uncommon.
