Leaking oil, need some assistance

Post by 16turbodiesel »

Hi everyone, I finally decided to join this forum and need some opinions on a few things.
First is my car has recently been leaking quite a bit of oil from the oil pan gasket, so I ordered a new rubber gasket and just curious on if I need a sealing compound when installing it and if so, which is best.
Second, my turbo oil return line is leaking too. Are all the mounting flanges universal on turbos? I'm thinking of going with a braided steel line kit. Also the mounting point on the oil pan. I like having all my parts ready to go BEFORE I start turning wrenches (which rarely happens) but makes things so much easier! Car is a '92 Jetta Ecodiesel with factory K14 turbo.

Glad to hear you bought the rubber oil pan gasket as a replacement.
You shouldn't need any sealer with it but you could put a small swipe in the corners or where the paper seal carrier gasket sits.

Where is the turbo oil return leaking from?
I like replacing the braided center section with silicone heater hose.

Would it be OK with out any at all, or do you recommend it?

Its somewhere right underneath the turbo, maybe the flange? Mine is the factory straight metal tubing. I'm hoping to get rid of all my oil leaks! Thanks for the reply!

When there's a transition from one gasket to another (even material change), it's best to use just a dab of silicone.

Without any sealer. I haven't started the project yet, but I did buy some rtv black silicone, so I hope that does the trick!

You can do them dry, but a very small dab of silicone helps seal any misalignments. A very small amount, as remember as you torque the pan down, it will squeeze out.

I found the pan bolts close to the flywheel difficult to put back in with a ratchet, because it's not really a straight shot. I had better luck by cutting a screwdriver slot on the head of the bolts to get those few started.

I've done mine by using a 1/4" drive and a swivel on the end of it. It's tight, but it works.

Did it fix your leak?

I bought a 10mm swivel socket so I hope it'll fit right...

I haven't done it yet, I'm in the process of moving and busy with work, maybe this weekend I'll find time to get it done.

So I installed the new gasket, silicone on the corners, everything was nice and clean, go for a drive the next day and there's oil all over the pan again... So I looked at it a little, and can see oil puddling up around my dipstick tube that goes into the block... How can I prevent that from leaking everywhere?

Is your engine pushing up the dipstick and pushing out oil through the tube?

Sounds like it's just coming from the base not the top of the tube,...I think there is an o-ring where the dipstick tube meets the block.
The tube is bolted to the injection pump on the eco diesels right?

No, its leaking around the base of the tube where it meets the block. I do see the (aluminum?) base that goes into the block, and that's where oil is puddling up around.
Yes it is bolted to a bracket on the base of the injection pump.

My car used to push the dipstick up, but hasn't been lately... Is this an issue also?
