Fuel prices are pretty decent right now but I drive a pontiac g8 and I'm only getting about 9mpg right now. I have a lead foot when i drive it, and it's tuned on e85.

Reassembled the car, left the fuel line off on the injector side, got all the air out of the pump, started cranking it. No fuel out of the lines but the fuel shut off solenoid is leaking.

I'm not exactly sure of fuel flow but wouldn't that mean I'm building pressure in the pump if it's pushing fuel out of the solenoid?

Oh and the solenoid is clicking, and I used a jumper wire from the battery to make sure I'm not losing ignition power.

Do you have a clear line coming from the pump,.. going to the tank?
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.

No, its got a black braided line. I haven't gotten around to changing it to clear

That's an important line to have clear. Tells you alot about fuel flow through the pump.

If you can see enough of the return line that the braided line attaches to near the bulkhead, and if is transparent, then that is sufficient; (if it is like the Quantum...)

You have fuel leaking out of the fuel solenoid location, but none coming out of the injectors, and the solenoid clicks. It sounds good, but to know for sure, remove the plunger and spring and reinstall. I only say that from real world experience. I was driving the old winter jetta home from work a few years ago, and the car shut off just like you turned the key off. I coasted to a stop, diagnosed that no fuel was coming from the IP, remove the solenoid, pulled the plunger and spring, reinstalled, fired it up and drove it home. I got home, removed the fuel solenoid, put the guts back in, installed it and proceeded to manually hotwire it several times and heard it click. After 3-4 time, then it literally smoked and that was it. In my experience, I've had them click, but it may not be good. Plus, if the plunger is sticking and the solenoid is good and clicking, no amount of doing anything to it will solve that issue until you know that the plunger is stuck.

The project has been put on hold. Just moved into a house this weekend so I'm getting moved in there. Should be back at it by next weekend.

It's been a little while since I've had an update on this. I haven't had time to rebuild the pump. I'm working out of state. I've decided to order a pump. Gonna pick one up from here. Is there a core exchange or shipping fee or is It just a straight fee?

There is a core charge but I think I just shipped in one of my old ones when I ordered. I don't recall the details on shipping fees but you can email the email address up in the logo (vwdiesel@vwdieselparts.com) and probably get all those answers pretty quickly. The pump rebuilder that Jack uses does a good job in my opinion. The only issue I had was getting the fuel stop screw adjusted which took at least a full turn to get mine working nicely. Beyond that this pump works better than any other I have had, well worth the cost in my opinion.

I ordered my pump from vwdieselparts. It showed up yesterday. I'm still out of town for work but I had the wife open it up and show it to me while we facetimed. Looks to be well worth the money, nice and clean. I'll be home middle of next week and I'll get to install it. Looking forward to getting to drive my little car again and going to a few VW cruise-ins with it. It always gets tons of looks because of how complete it is.

Once you get it set up if it works as well as mine does you'll be pleased. I especially like the way the advance kicks in at about 2700 rpm since my old one really stayed pretty much flat at higher rpms.
