Starter Bolts

Post by wewantutopia »

Hi Everyone.

I'm removing my starter and the 2 allen bolts are siezed (and now stripped...) I'm going to have to use a bolt extrator to get them off (probable the irwin bolt-grip http://www.lowes.com/pd_577634-281-3940 ... d=50146292) and then get replacements.

I'm currently at work. Does anyone know what size the bolts are?? (The allen size used and outside diameter of the bolt head. Length would be good to. Oops thread size too!).

Also, can regular hex bolts be used? Why were they allens to begin with, is the space too tight for a socket??

Thank you so much in advance!!!!!

You might be able to get away with regular hex head bolts.
On the Rabbit starter it would be too tight to fit a socket on but the MK2s might have more room near the bolt.
The MK2s often use triplesquare bolts.
If you have a triplesquare tip, they can often be driven into an allen head to grip it. Can ruin the tool but I always keep my worn out triplesquares for this.

If you have access to a welder, you can weld a nut on the end of the old bolt and use that to extract the bolt. Not sure where you'd clamp the ground clamp so you don't weld through the starter. Fastenall has all sorts of bolts and may have bolts in stock that will fit when you get them removed. I don't know why VW used all sorts of torx etc fasteners, but I'm sure it's messed up lots of people over the years.

If your going to take the starter out and leave it for awhile. It's probable a good idea to put the bolts back in. But in your case jacking the tranny up would be a better idea. Turn the bolts with your hand to find the sweet spot where the tensions off the bolts. The motor has a tendency to sag and make it hard to get the bolts back in.

Ok got the bolts off.

I had a jack stand under the tranny but apparently not tight enought. Will have to putz around with a jack during reinstallation.

The bolts are definitely triple square. doh! Now they're circles! The bolt extractor I linked to worked like a charm! (the 5/8" just barely fit)

Now another question.

These look like m10 1.5x140 bolts! Any recommendations where to buy such long bolts?

Never mind... fastenal of course!

I didn't realize how long they are! New ones will be socket head cap screws (allen).

Are these the appropriate strength you think?

The VW part number for that bolt is N0447601

ECS shows it as a M10x1.25x135...

I would just order one from the dealer if you have one close...no shipping charge, just go pick it up when they get it in, usually next day.

Thanks for checking EcoTX. I'm not sure what bolt that is but I just verified the bolts that came out of my starter with known m10 1.5 pitch nuts/bolts and that is the pitch (not 1.25). Odd that the part would come up otherwise...
