WTB: MK2 speedo CE1 (1985-1989?)

Post by 30dodgeboy »

Need a good CE1 speedo. Either 120mph or 100mph.

1986 Jetta, CE1, cluster has two electrical connectors on back, one white and one black.

When I first got the car, it read ~15% too high all of the time. Then it started to occasionally read accurately. Lately it changes +/- 15% as it wishes. Really. When driving along at a steady speed, the speedometer will go up or down 10-15mph at about 65mph. Seems to be affected by bumps in the road, and sometimes throttle position. I don't understand. I thought the speedometer was entirely mechanical, but it acts like an electrical component with a bad electrical connection. I swapped the speedometer driven gear to the green one with one more tooth, but that seemed to only slow down the odometer - the speedo still reads the same, way too high.

Thanks.

Gasser one OK?
Otherwise I do have a diesel one I removed the tach from..

'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.

A couple questions:

1.) Is the speedometer part of the cluster interchangeable between CE1 and the later (CE2?) instrument clusters?

2.) What is the electronic connection to the back of the speedometer - a way for the ECM to record mileage for the emissions service interval?

Thanks.

That connection on the rear might be for cruise control. I don't think the diesels have a check engine light at a certain mileage.
I'm not sure about the interchangeability of the CE1 and CE2 speedos.

thanks for the reply.

the electrical connection I was referring to was on the back of a gasser cluster.

my only diesel cluster is still in the car.

anyone have one? Now I think I could use an entire cluster as the temp gauge stopped working.
