Seriously, cracks between the valves are common and are often superficial.
Does the cam rock in it's journals when the caps are removed?
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.

The head from the parts car would not work on my block. The bolts were different and the bolt holes in the heads were different sizes. Back to square one.

That's not necessarily a deal killer. I've driven 50k miles on my mismatched head and block since changing the headgasket.

I would have to drill out the holes in the spare head so that the bolts would pass through or use the bolts that were originally in the spare head and cut off some of the length for them to work.

Different bolts and different threads.
So the bolts won't swap between blocks but the holes can be drilled out.
I believe the washers are also larger on the 12mm bolts so where they sit needs to be wider,.. or some folks just make the washers smaller.
