I'm Back!!

Post by iamvandemon »

Hello all yall greasy VW suckers.. ;)

I'm back to working on my VWs. Here is my latest project.

Here in the rust belt, the 89 Jetta I was driving was like a piece of swiss cheese on wheels. I confiscated my dads 91 that my sister had run without coolant. Pulled the overheated engine and power steering, regressed the inner cv and manual steering rack I was swapping in. (By the way anyone want to buy a power steering assembly rack, pump, res, etc... ?)
Image
Image
I build a new mount for the alternator and installed it with the new belt.
Image
put the 89's engine in and hooked everything up. I then power washed and painted a bit before installing the radiator and front end. I also moved the radiator forward to make some more room in the engine bay.
Image
Image
I did a bunch of body work i.e. cut out rust and fiber glassed etc.. The floors weren to bad, but I layed in some heavy fiberglass over the floor pans to protect them from future damage anyhow.
Image
Then I sprayed the first coat of the new blue.

I've been doing a bit of research into paint systems. Summit and Westwood are claiming they can offer paint at very reduced prices because they have very limited colors and don't offer color matching. They also claim their paint is as good or better then the big brands at the walk in stores?

From the pictures it almost looks like your painting outside. If that's the case how do you stop the dust from getting on the rock panels as you spray?

Your right. I did paint outside. The answer is I don't. There is plenty dust and bugs in my paint job. I live in the country and I drive on dirt roads half of the time. My car is ALWAYS covered in dust and mud, so why stress about a little in the paint. Know one will ever know. Seriously.
If you are going for show quality, you must build/have a much more controlled environment to paint in.

I am a 'good enough' type painter. :)

As far as the brands of paint. It depends on what you want. Sometime you are buying a name. I should think its hard to find 'bad paint'. I buy paint that's cheap and durable ($25/gal) single coat. Its all about what you want.

Good start on a nice MK2 project.
I want to try some painting, maybe at least get my hatch painted before the weather changes.

There's a real good primer over at autobody101 under advise to newbies to help get are painters hat on. Or you can just make your paint job peel like banana split. Shoot first ask question later. At lest it will taste good. I usually get orange peel no shiny apples for me. It hides the bad body work a lot better.

Yup, a little learning goes a long way. This is my 3rd paint job and I've gotten pretty consistent on my prep work. No orange peal or fish eyes. Just plenty dust and bugs. If you want show quality, you really need to make yourself a very clean paint room. The sprayer can kick up dust from walls, ceiling, lights, etc. not to mentions bugs and dust just floating around in the air. For me, I'm satisfied with a 'good' looking paint job that will protect the body from the elements.

P.S. I'm waiting on my new lights to come in, and I need to fix the twisty bumpers. I parked the Jetta off to the side while I finish rebuilding this excavator I've been working on. I painted some black along the bottom of the car. I think its looking pretty good, so I'll post final pics once I get the bumpers done.

I only have one vehicle that I would give the velvet glove treatment. That would be my Gold Steam B campervan (very similar to a roadtek B but Canadian). I'm considering doing my Caravan with acrylic enamel or one coat urethane. It's flaked off on the roof and real flat on the hood but the sides look real good base coat clear coat. Except for a rust spot on drive side rear wheel well? I saw a little chev car go by me the other day that had the whole thing rock guarded in pink. Their was a nice young Barbie driving it.

Bumper: I decided to go ahead and build a matching bumper pair out of an old rusty pipe I had laying around. I wanted a look that would be, in my mind, a throw back to the mki'ish look. I think they will be pretty good for the price.

At this point I'm still worried about how it will look..

Well I can't put it off any longer, time to wire in the front lights. I didn't want to have the turn signal boxes so I wired up the fog lights to double as turn signals as well. I had to add an extra relay so that both sides wouldn't blink at the same time. Not sure how the current blinkers will handle the higher wattage bulbs... we will see.

Fog light?
Those lights between the headlights?
I think those are better used connected to the high beam.
The ones on the Golf really light up the road.

I'm sure you are right, but I REALY didn't want to make space for the turn signal housings...
