New Strut mounts, same problem. MK2

Post by ad »

I've noticed a little rattle when I hit bumps, mostly noticeable at low speed.
Discovered some play in the strut by grabbing and rocking the strut. Also noticed that the top cap of the strut is about 3/4" above the body.
So I assumed bad strut mounts.
When I had it apart, the new mounts appeared thicker than than the old compressed mounts, making me think I was on the right track.
I replaced the mounts and now nothing has changed, in fact the rattle is worse. Here is a pic of what it looks like now, was about the same before the new mounts.
Any ideas of what else it could be? Struts are about 2 years old IIRC. Would worn out springs cause this?

Did you shave the spacer/bushing?
I think that's the same as the MK1s.

Shave?
No, I simply removed the old mount and put the new ones on.

Are you talking about the threaded bushing/nut with the two notches that holds the assembly together?
Why would I have to shave it?

No, the MK2 strut mounts are different, but similar in design.

I did some research and found out about shaving the bushing. Since I have a lathe, it was easy. This has helped reduce the gap and tighten up the clunking sound, but still not as good as it should be.

Where is the clunk sound originating... high, middle, low? Where is the play? up/down, side/side?

Top cap height looks fairly normal.
Have a nice day.

Glad to hear you were able to shave the bushing.
I also think there might be a MK4 upgrade where you use later parts.
The Mk2 setup has always baffled me,.. how when you lift the car the struts drop
