As you've noticed there are a few things you can learn by watching how the air or fuel flows in those line that will help you diagnose a problem..
I just grab some 1/8" vinyl line. It fits a little loose at the beginning sometimes but tightens up after a few heat cycles.
I currently have clear ones, but they seem to fit too loose. I have so 1/8" but it was so tight I couldn't get it over the barb. I'm going to use some heat and see if that helps just to get it over the barb.

If the 1/4" lines fit loose I slide a piece of 3/8" rubber hose over it,
then slide it over the barb and slide the rubber hose up the vinyl like a hose clamp.
Helps to put some silicone grease on the tubing to get the hose to slide.

Hard to use a clamp on vinyl line without it bunching up and leaking but with the piece of rubber hose over it you can even add a hose clamp.
