manual steering rack

Post by 30dodgeboy »

My 86 Jetta steering rack recently developed some looseness inside. Anyone ever have one of these apart? are they adjustable/rebuildable? If not, where is a good source for a quality replacement? I have rebuilt steering boxes in older cars before, but never a rack.

I'd check with the site owner, see what they have.

Racks can be found for about 150 new, 75 -100 used.

Are you sure it's not an inner tie-rod? I had to replace my left last year. (same vintage as yours).
Have a nice day.

Yes, there is an adjuster on the back of them to tighten them up a little bit.
Being you show Wisconsin.......you may well have a heavy dose of corrosion back there.

If you can free it to adjust it, a little goes a LONG way.
