Effect Of A Too Thick Head Gasket??

Post by Thomas M »

Re: 1.6 Non-Turbo Diesel

Does anyone have an idea of how much putting the wrong size (too thick) head gasket in place would effect the compression? Some commentary has suggested that a hasty mechanic could do that to expedite the job.

For this hypothetical, let's say that the correct size would be the "two hole" thick gasket. So, instead, a "three hole" is installed.

Apparently, it would run, but would it be noticeable to a non-performance driver???

Comments???

Many VW dealer service techs used to do this all the time, to skip the step of checking piston protrusion, i.e. save time / flag more "flat rate time" for greater pay. No, most drivers wouldn't notice any effect from the small drop in compression. Theoretically, it could make it just a bit harder to start in extremely cold weather, and some would say that it might even result in a minute drop in fuel mileage.
