manual vs auto adjusting clutch cables

Does anyone know for sure if the two can be interchanged on a given car?

If it matters it is a 1986 Jetta 1.6D.

I have a self adjusting cable that has a mind of its own and want to switch over to manual adjustment style.

Seems to me that if the pedal assembly would be common between the two versions it would make more manufacturing sense, but my Bentley book says the cables are not interchangeable.

Thanks.

I don't think any mk1/2's were made specifically for self-adjusting cables. Adjusting the manual cable is pretty easy if you just look at the free play at the transmission lever.
Since they're pretty cheap I keep a spare cable stashed in car, just in case it snapps out on the road.

I have no objection to swapping over to manually adjusted cable, in fact I prefer it. I just am looking for whats different PREVENTING a swap (or a means to work around it) between the two cables. Its a daily driver, otherwise I would just dive into (and sideline) the car. From the little info that I can find, they appear to be slightly different where they connect to the firewall??

I pretty sure I just swapped cables, from auto to manual.
Nothing else changed.
It's been awhile but I'm almost certain.
