How do you Prove a Off-The Shelf used injection pump!

Post by 1RED-RYDER1 »

Assured it was removed from a running engine…30 Years Ago!

Anyone willing to share their experience?

At This point I don’t want to ‘swap-out’ my Injection Pump….until I ask questions from the forum

BTW….Thanx to Coke and Fatmobile for their Efforts!!!!

More people should ask this question.
I put the pump in a vice and spin it with a socket using a 1/2" variable speed drill to get a visual of it's operation.
Rig up a small fuel system with 1/4" tubing (clear), fuel filter on the suction side, and the return side going
back into the fuel jar or whatever.

When you spin the pump, you'll see how it moves fuel and primes itself.
If that goes well, connect a 12v DC power supply to the fuel solenoid. It should make an audible click when it gets power.

Now, put something to catch fuel at the delivery valves. With power to the pump, when you spin it fuel should spit out of
the delivery valves. If you work the throttle while spinning the pump you should see fuel quantity increase.

One thing I've noticed is that it sometimes takes a while for the fuel to start spitting out of a pump that has been sitting.
Doing this really helps get the pump ready to run. Compared to priming with the engine starter, a drill spins the pump much faster.
Not doing this can lead to a lot of long engine cranking which is very hard on the starter and battery.
But most of all, it's good to see that the pump primes itself and injects fuel before doing all that work of installing.

Btw, the fuel was dark in my because I had filled the pump with powerservice dieselKleen additive for storage.

Ha, you answered my "why's it so dark"? question before I asked.

I have only once heard of someone breaking the mainshaft at the thinnest point
doing this.

So keep the speed down.
No need to make it spin fast.
This is a great plan.

Hearing that it sat for 30 years isn't good.
Have you ever taken one apart?

Red-Ryder w/an update on 30 year ‘on-the shelf’ IP….

Got home, was unable to rotate the drive pulley a full turn….advised by Superior Turbo-Injection-Detroit ‘Fuel Room Supervisor’….”pull the Fuel Inlet….fill with PB Blaster AND pull the Supply fill w/PB Blaster….let IP sit coupla days”.

Low And Behold the drive pulley is rotating again.

No,I haven’t dis-assembled a Bosch VE IP. I have watched a YouTube videos. But that is on my bucket-list.

I’d like to hear of dis-assembly stories from fellow forum-watchers.

Steve/Parts Place-Sterling Heights Michigan told of a customer using a 12 volt pump to prime his weak IP, been using this procedure for coupla years.

I pulled the fuel tank dry….15 year old diesel fuel looks like weak ice tea….But it smelled like diesel from years ago! ULSD looks like Gatorade….mixed 1/2 and 1/2 real diesel and ULSD….soon looked dark and nasty….afraid to use it.

20 years ago I used 8oz auto trans fluid to a fill-up my last diesel bunny. Can’t say I noticed an improvement…

L@@K for my next posting….I have a problem with the 2nd IP I bought….

You might be able to salvage most of the old fuel if you treat it with a biocide.
My 300TD had old, dark diesel in the tank, I put in a bucket and treated it. The black settled to the
bottom then I poured most of it into jug and used it later.
Diesel biocide is good stuff to have around. For small diesels it will last for years because it doesn't take much.

30 years? dang. I'm thinking get a rebuilt. Hansautoparts has the cheapest, never bought one there but if I can
rebuild one... you can get timing tools while you're there. I'd get a good timing belt kit (like Gates) somewhere else.
This guy does injectors if you need that

Snapping the nose of the IP shaft?? Oh that would terrible. Not a usable core after that.
Definately start off slow, that's why the drill has to be variable speed and be 1/2" to have some torque
Yea, no need to go super fast, but compared to starter-cranking speed it's definitely faster.

Glad to hear you got it spinning.
That's a start.
A 12 volt helper pump will help get fuel from the tank
but the vanes inside the pump push the pressure up around 150psi.
That pressure controls the timing curve.
Without it the timing curve will be flat
retarded at higher RPMs.

Maybe it's because I've done it quite a few times but
I think the pumps are pretty easy to take apart and put back together.
And reseal kits are pretty cheap.
