Have you checked Hans Auto Parts? I have purchased pump rebuild parts from them, including vane/feed pumps, rebuild kits and a new rotor head. All good parts that worked well.

I have shopped at hans/prothe.
And almost all the parts worked great.
Only subpar part i got from them is a MK2 manual steering rack boot,
The one that goes from the column to the rack is very thin.
But it works.

I picked up a few of these vacuum pumps locally but need to test run them.
I'm sure I'll build one good one from the lot.

I bought a brake booster from this guy several months ago, just to have a spare.
He's been trying to sell his hoarded stash for a while,
might still have it.

Thanks, I need to go through the few I've gathered and see how well they work.

Sometimes I think the diaphragm style is more reliable.
Certainly easier to repair when they stop pulling.
They don't depend on oil pressure to work.
But I use the spot the old ones drain to, for a hose up to the CCV.

I wonder who makes the best diaphram kits for the oldstyle vac puumps..
Seems like that material should be better these days, even original ones lasted a long time.

I'm also wondering why the old style ones didn't just vent to the atmosphere, less resistance.
Do they leak oil out when the diaphram fails?

I was thinking there is oil in those old ones.
I really haven't opened one of those in awhile.
But it seems like there would be some lubrication.
The shaft still has an oil hole coming up from the bottom.
The super early ones had a little pig tail looking line coming from the oil filter mount.
So there is probably some oil coming from the output even when it's not leaking.

I got a good working vacuum pump in the old Rabbit today.
It is a vane-style pump.
It was junk at one time. I think because low oil pressure caused metal on the top to burnish into the spinning part.
I ran the body and the top on sandpaper until the grooves were out.
Took a long time.
I did the same thing to the one that was in there, but that one didn't work.
So it's hit and miss.
I really don't know what keeps the vane-style pumps from working.

I think with the vane style pumps it's mostly how
much play up and down of the shaft and how it
sits against the lid to get a good seal. The last time
I worked on some of those, replaced that dealer-only seal
but ended up swapping lids to finally get one working really good.

I wonder if that gear is just pressed on and gets out of adjustment
after a while.
