I've continued watching it - the cloud of smoke, while much reduced, remains excessive - and it's white-gray, so seems to be Diesel, from all I've learned.

But why?

Does it smoke only on start? Or does it smoke after warmed up too?
Whats the cold idle like? smooth or rough?

If it is only on start up then it might be that you have some bad
injectors. If it smokes all the time then it could be injectors and/or
the IP.

UPDATE: The heat shields could also be bad/plugged up.

This all asumes that it is "diesel smoke" and not oil smoke.
What does the smoke smell like? dieselly or oilly?
