Am looking at a nice 2002 Jetta TDI. It has an automatic transmission. What is reality in fuel mileage between that and a manual transmission. I don't hotrod and am generaly conservative in driving. Highway speeds use of air conditioning in summer. Would I be better off with a nice standard transmission instead?

There isn't much of a difference between an automatic and a manual transmission. The difference is like 3-5 mpg.

I have a 2001 New Beetle TDI with auto trans and get an honest 41 MPG (US gallons) in mixed city and highway driving. If I believe what the other guys are saying, the 5 speed manual TDIs get about 45 MPG or so in similar driving.

Either way a whole lot better than the wife's Explorer Sport Trac or dad's Expedition.
