68 bus with a diesel bell housing

Post by Buggin »

Does anyone know if a bell housing from a 82 Vanagon diesel will bolt to a 68 bus tranny. The bolt pattern sure looks the same. I have heard that the diesel input shaft is shorter than the Vanagon gas trannys input shaft but I don't know how similar the 68-71 or so trannys are to the Vanagon.

Prob will fit, even if you use one 68 gasket & one 82 gasket to seal things up.
Input shaft length prob very close. 68 is about 9/16" inch shorter than 77-on; don't know if it's same as diesel's. Kennedy makes complete flywheel adaptor setups for these.

Best wishes.

The diesel vanagon bell housing will bolt fine. I believe the input shaft will work as well. As mentioned, Kennedy makes an adapter plate. Given the taller engine compartment in the bay window busses, It might be easier to get the kennedy adapter and mount it in the 15° layout like the Jetta/Golf and use all of those engine parts considering that mountings will need to be fabricated regardless.
