Flashing warning light and no manual

I am a proud owner of a 97 VW Caravelle 2.5 TDI which has 160,000 miles on the clock. I brought it without an owner’s manual. The yellow glow plug light comes on occasionally and flashes. I am due to go abroad soon and relying on this vehicle not causing me any trouble. I intend to get the belt, filters and oil changed before I go, but also want to find out about this warning light. Appreciate your help please.
