My daughter has a 2001 Jetta TDI, yesterday the "malfunction" light came on accompanied by a strong vibration and increased noise, it's not clear to me how bad the vibration is or what kind of noise it is (she's about 100 miles away and I just found out late last night). At idle however, she says the dash mat will not stay on the dash so it must be somewhat severe. The owner's manual says it's safe to drive but get it to VW soon, the local delaer (Albuquerque NM) will see it tomorrow.

Any ideas what we're looking at here?

Never mind, turns out the motor mount broke and the light came on when the shifting engine broke off the EGR valve.
