DIY pre-pump fuel line heater // heat exchanger

Has anyone experimented with using a glow plug on the fuel line to heat fuel? I've seen it almost set up - it had a thermostat and shutoff relay hooked up to maintain the right temperature, but never found out if it worked properly.
Any other cheap/DIY alternatives for fuel line heaters?

Another source to pick up "free" fuel line heat is from the exhaust system itself. You can use your hand (or infrared thermometer) to find the "hot" spots along the exhaust pipe. These spots will occur where there is a fairly sharp bend in the pipe and the hot exhaust gases hit the "backside" of the radius. If its to hot to hold your hand on it for more than a few seconds, its a good spot to tap. I have used plain copper tubing wrapped tightly around the exhaust pipe with good results. The tubing must be held in solid contact with the pipe for maximum heat transfer. To prevent heat loss, wrap the whole section with "race car" exhaust wrap. This contains the heat instead of letting it transfer to the surrounding air.
