Air-cooled tranny on 1.6D

Post by downbytheriver »

I was wondering if anyone has experience with putting a air-cooled vanagon tranny on a jetta 1.6D in a vanagon? How much slower is your acceleration and how much faster can you go and keep a decent rpm? Also what did you do to make the conversion? Did you use the vanagon shift linkage? Thanks for any info.

Don't do it unless you swap the motor as well. You won't improve your top speed because the engine doesn't put out enough power. You will simply slow down the already sluglike vehicle. As far as the swap is concerned, they are direct replacements. No need to change the shift linkage. You need to use the bell housing and input shaft from the diesel tranny.

If you want to improve your top speed you will need to swap engines as well.
