Anyone rebuilt a turbo?

Post by dtreid »

My 91 Jetta TD really needs a turbo rebuild. Is this a job a mere mortal like me could do, or do I need to send it to a shop?

Thanks

There's a guy on the GTD Forum (Vendors section),
I think his name is "dieselicious" (or something like that)
who sells kits, complete with instructions and up-rated
bearings.

The guy on the GTD forum is named fspGTD.

He has a post about 5 down from the top under

the "Vendors" section.

I believe he sells a kit for around $80

Sorry. I don't know how to post a link

Just do a Google search on VW GTD

Or, alternatively, type in www.VWdiesel.net

and scroll down to DISCUSSION FORUMS.

The top half of the forum is in French (it's run

by a guy out of Montreal) and the bottom half

is in English,

Hope this helps.

links

Post by Fatmobile »

Sorry. I don't know how to post a link
And he still doesn't know how to post links, haha.
I usually go to the site, click on the address window and hit control, c (that's the ctrl button and the letter c at the same time). This copys anything selected into memory and it can now be placed in any post by hitting ctrl, v (at the same time).
You can move stuff all over the place by selecting it (holding left click and dragging the curser over it) Control,c (cut)... control, v (paste).
You can sometimes click on edit, at the top of your browser and see some of what the control button can do.

You can also use the mouse to copy as well. Just block out by left clicking with the mouse. Then right click and hit copy. Then put the cursor were you what the copy then right click and hit copy.

Ha Ha, yourself.

I was going to post a biting rejoinder.

Like: Typical Yankee dog, laughing at

other peoples failings.

However, as you've posted vast quantities

of useful information, you've managed to

redeem yourself. So, I'll let it pass...this time.

As for my computer-illiteracy, as you Americans

know, only too well, incompetence can raise

one to the highest levels. So, there's hope for me yet.

funny

Post by Fatmobile »

It struck me as funny, that you claimed to not know how to post a link,... then you look at your post and there's a link... you try it and it works .... but you have no idea how you did it.
Didn't mean it to be an insulting laugh... I had a mental image of you going through this.... and you still didn't know how to post a link.... it cracked me up.... bet it made you laugh too.
That was some kind of automatic feature on the forum that if you have a word that starts with www.before.something it automatically makes it a link.
Give that cut and paste info a try. It'll come in real handy.

I've rebuilt a KKK on my 1.6TD and it was pretty easy. I bought a turbo kit based on the serial number on the turbo housing. Cost about $120.

Its pretty strait forward. With the new parts and bushings, it pretty much tightens everything up and stops the oil leak. Take your turbo off and take it apart on a piece of newspaper. Mark the housing so you know the position of the housing sides. Just put everything in order on the newspaper.

You do need to make sure that your impeller has not hit the side of your turbo housing. If it has and made some scratches or marks, it will be out of balance and you should get a new one so it won't explode on you and you breath the parts in your intake and valves.

You can get everything at your local diesel fuel injection pump service place.

Rebuilding a Turbo

Post by 1.6D-Nut »

I've done it. I've rebuilt several over the years. Pretty simple/straightforeward ,as long as you have no physical damage to the shaft, impellers, or housings.
You will need a torque wrench that reads in inch pounds, or whatever the metric equivalent to inch pounds is, if you're a metric person!
Other than that,a clean work area and hand tools will pretty much do ya.
Always 3-5 A1's on hand!

So I guess if the impeller hits the house the turbos a write off.
