ok so its either an MF or an ME... would the timing and belt be the same for both blocks? And also, are the rod and main bearings the same?

thanks again.

Yes and yes. That little extra line on the bottom of the second letter is very significant. ME is much more common. MF is much more valuable. I would recommend using some sandpaper or scotchbrite to clean it to be sure one way or the other.

Hey there Cob miester...

I will send you my good N/A pump if that is indeed a good leaky td pump.
Hell I 'll drive to meet you at the 15/87 boarder! Free!

the number on the pump is 254 BS 4010

I decided to have it rebuilt, but any info on what kind of pump it is would be helpful. here are some pictures of it:

I had an ME that had a lot of blow-by and it got replace by a CR (I think). Is ME an engine that just does not have the life of other diesel blocks? I ran into someone that had an 86 Golf with only 200,000 miles and he also had very low compression (assuming his is an ME also). It makes me wonder if the ME blocks just are as good and the Rabbit counter part (CR). Obviously, the MF (Mk2 Turbo) with the piston cooling oil squirters will last longer than an ME. I would imagine that ME and CY are almost the same block other than the ME has an extra head oil drain because of the hydro lifters. One would think that they would be made out of the same material too. It may have more to do with mechanical maintaince than anything too.

If you want to cut cost, you can put a Rabbit injection pump in it. You have to get Rabbit injector lines or make a good clamp to keep them from breaking, but it might save you a couple of bucks from prices I have seen. It would lack the SDA that your pump has and the higher idle with the cold start out. Just a thought.

Engine Code Reference Sheet

'91 1.6L NA Diesel Jetta (1500 hrs since I have owned it)
'86 2.1L Gas Vanagon 7 passenger (123,000 mi)

Is that an LDA or an SDA on top of that pump?
