Fuel tank replacement

Has anyone replaced the gas tank on a 1986 golf diesel? Mine has developed a few small beads of sweating diesel fuel along the two straps. Nothing major but with fuel prices up so high I hate to loss any at all.

May just be a bad seal on the cover plate on top of the tank where the fuel gauge sender goes in. Maybe the fuel sloshes when you stop or turn corners and a little seeps out.

I think it's accessible from the passenger compartment under the carpet or under the back seat? Not sure on a MkII Golf.
