locked out
I was thinking child lock but you've checked that.
You can get to it with a stick?
I remember having to use a vicegrip on an allen wrench to disable mine after it closed and the outside handle didn't work.

i became a pro quickly as my doors siezed shut in the winter time, i would get in the back seat, use a prybar to push the panel away from the door jam and you can actually get a skinny flathead screwdriver onto the latch part, with a hammer blow on the end of the screwdriver in the right position "pop" and the door swings open.

lube
I like to first clean the entire lock mechanism with some parts cleaner (brake clean will do). Then lube it up with some stuff like Hi-Tack. It sprays like oil but sets up like grease. Also then remove the door handle, clean the handle the same way, but I grease it with synthetic grease. If it is a front door I take out the lock cylinder and clean it throughly, and also use synthetic grease on the 'sliders'. This keeps water from getting in and freezing/locking it all up.
