And when you have municipalities that require people to pay for disposal of things, that's sometimes why you find that people will come up with other ways of disposal, whether in a responsible manor or not. I'm just in the mindset that this freon stuff isn't creating a hole in the ozone, but that's for another conversation. One has to wonder what happens to all those cars that are involved in accidents and leak their freon out when the system is compromised anyways................

When I took my van in to have the freon removed, they didn't charge me anything.
They got some free freon out of the deal.

I know this is mainly an a2 thread, but I thought I'd throw my somewhat temporary Mk1 solution in.
I used a 90 amp alternator from an 86 Golf. It WILL fit, but you have to remove the condenser and it's tight.

Hey guys I have an 85 jetta 1.6d with P/S and A/C and I have been looking into removing the a/c compressor and rotating the Alt. down so I can get rid of the crappy idler tensioner (getting sick of replacing a/c to Alt. v belts). My question is on my vehicle do I need to remove the IP in order to get the Alt. bracket off and take out the compressor?

If you plan to remove the bracket for some reason.
You might have to remove the pump.
The top 2 bolts can be difficult to get to without a special wrench.

I rotated the alternator down and ground off where ever it touched:

The stock non-AC alternator has it's mounting holes 180 degrees apart, on opposite sides of the alternator. The AC alternator in you car has it's mounting points about 60 degrees apart.
I used a bracket to move the mounting hole closer to the 180 position:

The green arrow points to the adjuster bar, everything else is mounted solidly to the alternator,... it's an alternator adjuster from a '91 Golf gasser,... digi II.

A side view shows the washers used to mount it square with the alternator:

Here's a picture of it on the car:

The alternator shop helped me pick a pully with the right offset.
It ended up being a double pully from,... I think it was a '93-'95 Ford truck. I can't remember the part #.
A cheap, easy conversion to non-AC.
Sounds like you could sell some of the AC parts on here.
Sorry for pulling up such an old thread but it is relevant! I am working on deleting my AC (it is currently only being held on by 2 bolts)

Fatmobile: what is the part in the 3rd picture that the green arrow is pointing to. It is the part in picture 4 that the part the green arrow is pointing to is attached to.

Thanks!

I believe that curved bar is from a '91 gasser VW,... Golf/Jetta
it's the alternator adjuster bar.
Probably available on pre-digi gasser VWs too like the CIS '85- '86 stuff. I'm not real familiar with gasser parts.
The washer/spacer pointed to in picture 5 is a head bolt washer from a 1.5,.. I think, ha.

My 86 gas Jetta has one of those cogged alternator adjusting brackets on it.

Riiight, I thought maybe.
Also forgot to mention that I'd rather have an old post bumped than a bunch of different threads on the same topic.

Hello everyone,
I started searching for info on this after I found out my AC housing broke and making my belts slip something awful. So when I found this thread I was really excited. Now one question i do have is about the pictures because pictures are worth a thousand words. For some reason its not showing me pictures so I figured it was my phone, well now I'm on my computer its still not showing pictures. Just says (Image).
Fatmobile; is there any chance you still have some pictures I could see so I could get an idea of what I'm going to do?

Yeah, imageshack started out as free.
Now they are holding my pictures hostage and I'm not paying.
I'll have to rehost all of them.
Imageshack sucks.
So thanks for bringing this to the top and I'll get some pictures rehosted with flicker

Did anyone save the pictures from this post?
I can't find them anywhere on my computer and would like to repost them.

This is a good mod that has worked well for everyone who tried it,.. except when they tried a push instead of pull type tensioner.
