It'll never be like the old thread but maybe Coke and viper?? can put some of their pics back in and I'll try to find the picture of the A1, non-AC alternator bracket and how it set the 90 amp alternator too far toward the radiator.
My timing belt is only about 11,000 miles old, it's dry and rides almost right down the middle of the pully.
My camera could be better though :)

Fats----I still have some of my pics from my A/C deleto, but remember I had trouble posting the pics. I had to send them to you in order to get posted on the forum. Maybe I'll try again.
It's been about 12000 miles since the deleto of the A/C, no worries yet. I might modify my tensioning bracket so I have more range of motion for tightening the belt. It has worked great so far, and the belt still looks new and tracks straight. That was the best thing I ever did to that hack----removing the aftermarket A/C setup.

Fatmobile----a few things to add to my previous post. I still have the pics of the fabricated bracket with dimensions if you want them. A friend of mine runs a fab shop, and convienently enough, he has a laser. So I was thinking about having him make me a slightly modified version of my tensioner bracket so it is a little easier to tighten the belt. I will be talking to him this weekend, and I'll see what he says.

I remember your adjuster bracket being longer than normal and curved,... but can't recall the details.
...and if I remember right the pics you sent weren't in JPG format so I didn't know how to post them and Coke posted them for us.

Hey tylernt, Thanks for posting those for us.
Looks like an A2 alternator bracket, with an A1 (rubber power plug on the back instead of a lug) AC alternator.
That alternator usually requires a skinny swivel bolt, the long swivel bolt on the A2s is fatter... drilled out?

Thanks for posting those pics, tylernt. Fatmobile----I think I did clean out that hole for the bigger bolt. I remember on the bottom mount bolt I put a spacer there so the alternator would line up nice. I was thinking about making a new bracket with a longer adjustment slot that curves around the alternator for ease of tighening the belt. I'll mess with it and see what dimensions work better.

I don't like the added complication of AC in the engine bay,... but the extra center vents in a Rabbit are nice.

I found a cover - never mind the below...

Hi All,

I'm looking to **purchase** some of your left over A/C components if you want to make a little money while deleting your system. Specifically, I need the box that goes over the blower motor, mounted in the engine compartment, in where the wiper motor is and rain tray. I think it has a vacuum actuator on it that opens/closes a flap. I have a 1981 VW pickup. I'll gladly pay a fair price plus shipping, etc.

Please contact me if you have one of these that you want to get rid of.

Thanks,
Steve

The pully I used for my swap came from the WAI catalog.
Part # 24-2106, for the 1/2" belt
or 24-2105 for the 10mm belt.
Here's a lame pic of the same setup in my Rabbit:

minus the small bracket that will be needed to support the upper timing belt cover.

If one wants to remove the a/c. Ill need to remove more than just the compresso, freon hoses and condesor? What all in the dash needs removed and or replaced? Any holes in the firewall I wil have to cover? Should I get a new control unit?

Yopu can unscrew the hoses from under the dash and remove everything forward of that.
