I have an enthusiasm to see the mileage continue to climb on my little VW. The car is used as a summer car, so the mileage doesn't accumulate as fast as I would like to see it. On Saturday, it reached another milestone achievement in it's life. I do love this little car..........

It's the factory dash in my 82 Rabbit. I will have to check the 83 and 84's I have out back to see if there is anything different to those. I don't remember any difference. My 86 Jetta has a different speedo, but I can't remember if it stops at 85 or not (it may go to 120). There was a time in the 80's where all US cars (that I know about) had speedo's that stopped at 85. Don't know if it was the Govt's idea to get people to stop at 85 or not.

Makes scence, My old 1979 F150 that has a 460 in it stops at 85, Altough ten years ago when I was 21 years old I replaced the 4:10 gears with 3:55 and wrapped the speedo back around to 20mph more than enough times

IIRC in 87 the US national speed limit was lifted from 55, to state regulated limits. In the 70ies, when the 55 limit was imposed most manuafcturers shipped cars with the 85 MPH top end. Though I've been in several exotics from 55 mph period and they had speedos over 160MPH.

When I was a kid I just assumed it was a federal mandate--like 5mph bumpers.

The fed regulates and mandates an amazing amount of stuff.. (for our own good you know because we are just stupid people while they are elected knowledgeable bureacrats!!!) so that was an easy assumption...

Here's mine rolling over 700,000 (kms though, not miles) a little over a year ago. I'm up to 745,000 now.

How do you go faster than 140kph on a 1.6N/A diesel? Down a hill? Or maybe you have a turbo one. My rabbit would only do 136kph on the flat with a four speed NA 1.6. Its speedo went to 180, I always wondered why the speedo would go to 180? I remember the old dodge omni 2.2went to 140kph and it would bury that the needle would just jump on the pin. I think that little buzz box would go 160? Dont really know but I remember passing a old early 80's 6cylinder camaro with it on the highway and they could not keep up. I have a friend with a rampage a 83 or 84 the rare year anyways, I heard that they used the VW engines in them, if so I would put a diesel in that pickup. But wife says "NO MORE JUNK!" They don't understand...

I've had mine up to 160 km/h many times out on the highway (on the flat). Takes a while but it can be done. Came up behind a police car once doing 150 right after I bought it  The best I've gotten out of it is 172 km/h downhill.

I swear that's what the speedometer was showing. Could be why I ended up changing the motor shortly afterwards.
