Correct Timing Spec.

Post by bottleworks »

When I reinstalled my injection pump, I set the injection pump timing to .88mm +- .06mm (Not 100% on the +-). I am seeing many on here are setting the timing to 1.0mm. What should be the correct setting for the pre turbo 1.6L injection pump?

The Bentley manual lists the timing settings for a variety of pumps. If 0.88 is working OK, that should be fine. The higher numbers are usually from the "improved performance" part of the table.

More advanced will make it noisey, sometimes too noisy.
I have been rotating the pump while the engine is running to listen to changes,... then using the dial gauge to see where it ended up.
I think each fuel system has it's own best setting,.. depending on things like breaking pressure of the injectors and pump wear.

Each pump, doe to wear and age has a different personality. Hilbilly tuning is the best method for these old engines. My observations are...

1. pumps advance engine timing as rpm increase... (varies a lot)

2. Not all are the same.

3. a good pump with lots of advance will rattle like hell at higher rpm. You can definately hear it come in. I set my timing to the point where the rattle only appears at very high rpm (fully warmed up) .These leaves a smooth quiet engine at the rest of the power band.

4. If then engine smoke white /misses when cold, the timing is probably too retarded. In this state, pulling the cold start makes a big difference and really smooths things out.

5. If pulling the cold start knob has little effect when cold, you are close to ideal timing. If engine still runs crappy cold you have other problems like worn everything, old nozzles etc.

6. old worn pumps have little advance due to worn vane pumps, so set the timing that the engine runs well when cold. It will likely rattle good across the powerband, but thats the way its going to be.

7. The dial indicator spec is only a good starting point for fine tuning your pump, execpt with newer pumps.

8. nozzles nozzles nozzles...get new ones. makes a big difference in sound. Hard to time the engine by sound if the old nozzles make it rattle like hell.
