blinking oil pressure light

I recently purchased a 96 passat tdi. The car runs fine, however, the oil pressure light blinks from the time you turn the key. The oil pressure is good and the light goes out when you disconnect the upper pressure sensor. I replaced the sensor and it still blinks. My mechanic is at a loss to explain it. I havent picked up a Bently book yet, so I am working in the dark here. Does anyone have a clue what might be causing the problem? Thanks a lot.

check the water seperator. It may need to be emptied.
