Is my oil pump shot?

Post by diesel_fool »

Hey,

I'm moving along with my rebuild process. I'll hear back from the machine shop on Monday and I'll know what needs to be replaced. But I took apart my oil pump to check it today and I found a bunch of metal shards (pieces of a spring from a seal maybe?) caught in the strainer. So the clearances were all great but I took the gears out and found that the gears and the housing were scored pretty badly. I'm wondering if I should just replace the pump because of this scoring?

I'm no diesel expert but my money would be going for a new pump!
Wonder if they need/want your old one as a core anyway!
I just don't think you can clean that up without losing your clearances.
Those "shards" look too big to be from a seal, but as I said I'm no diesel expert!
All problems can be solved with the appropriate application of antimatter!

That pump is going to by-pass big time. I think it would put out less than half if all what it should.

You wanted to upgrade to the 36mm pump anyways ??!!

To me the real questions are:

(1) where did those shards come from ?
(2) what other damage did they do ?

The answer to (2) likely is "nothing, 'cause the filter caught everything the strainer didn't", and perhaps as you continue your rebuild you'll figure out Question 1.

The shards picture is a little out of focus. It looks like something very hard got stuck on a gear on the pump and machined the housing of the pump. Maybe thats what some of the shards are. Just like something out of a lathe. Is the other part of the housing with the gear in it just as bad.
