Engine transplant into a 60's VW Truck

Post by Vdub-bub »

Has anyone had any experience transplanting a Vanagon Diesel into a 60'ish VW Truck/Microbus? I have a line on an old truck and would like to put a Vanagon diesel into it.

Can it be done, I'm not afraid of some mods to the truck, just wondering how much work it is and if it's even possible.

Thanks,

I am adding some info, I am talking about the whole engine and drive train including the drive axles and suspension if required.

You're talking about going from air-cooled to water-cooled. THat means sticking a rad on the front (ugly) and lots of plumbing.

KEP adapter for tranny (or put the vanagon tranny in and adapt that too), and find a place for the radiator, those are the two main issues. Check out "conversion perversions" at shoptalkforums.com -- there my not be the same conversion you want, but the plumbing would be the same for any watercooled engine.

There's an excellent discussion about this very thing on the GTD forum
