Has anyone ever converted a 1982 1.6L diesel vanagon radiator (068121253A) to a 1983+ model such as 068121253E? I can't source the former part and would like to upgrade it to the newer version. From what I know, I need to change the radiator fan switch to the 3-connector type. What about the actual dimensions of the newer radiator and mountings? Will the newer ones fit without too much modification? Also, will the older coolant hoses fit on the newer radiator?
Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

The wiring is pretty simple. I think you can just cut and splice the old wires from the 2 switch setup, to work on the single 3-wire switch.
You'll also need the mounting brackets off of a donor car if you're using a gasser radiator. They fit in the same place, you just need to screw/weld in the brackets. My dad did it to his old 1982 diesel vanagon before he sold it (couldn't afford the $700 for a new diesel rad). I'll ask him what else needs to be done.
