Synthetic Oil for TDi

In the past I have changed the oil in VW Diesels I have bought to Mobil 1 soon after I bought them; Last year I tried the 0W-40 which has VW505 502 503.? NOTED on the back of the bottle. I have also uses Mobil1 5W-40 and Rotella 5W40. Without problems, I thought I woud ask for the opion of others for a change. I bought a 2003 Golf TDi this week. Used Car Dealer says previous owner always had maintainance done by VW dealership and they always used synthetic probably Mobil1 5W40!
So, what do you use and why?

I bought Castrol GTX high mileage 10W-40 (or 0-40?) to our TDI last time I changed. Why? Why not

IÂ´m happy if the label says itÂ´s VW 505 01 approved and for combustion ignition engine.

We either run Rotella 5W-40 in our 1Z or we run Schaeffer's Supreme 9000. AWESOME stuff btw. If you can get ahold of your local rep, get some! Has a bunch of Moly and other anti-wear additives. Awesome stuff. Throw a bypass filter on and you can have 12,000 mile oil drain intervals. I also run the Supreme 7000 in the gas engines. Had an 84 Toyota Tercel 4wd 1.5L 3AC beastie that I used to rev to 7000RPM daily (6k redline lol). Had 230k miles or something like that and perfect compression on all 4 holes. Factory spec 175 I believe. 160-165 on all 4 holes. Lol.

Your 2003 TDI should have a rotary pump, so 505.01 should be fine. I personally use Rotella-T 5W/40 synthetic. It's readily available at WalMart. Be sure to get a good German filter though (Mann, Mahle).

WALMART: I bought the last 6 QTS. Of Mobil 1 0W40 (Rated VW505) As they have been out of Mob1 5W40 For weeks. They are out of the Rotella 5W40 too!
