Timing belt

I have a 1982 Vanagon Deisel and my manual really focuses on the gas powered 1982, I have a new timing belt and wondered the proper technique for timing this van..can someone help?? :?

You'll need the Bentley manual or have someone do it for you. Someone who has done it before!

Glad to hear the van is still running.
You want to know how to time it? or install the belt?
It usually requires a dial indicator and adapter to time the injection.

To time it without any special tools;
you can loosen the injection pump bolts/nut, just enough to let the pump turn and rotate the pump with the engine running.
Lean the top of the pump as far toward the head as you can without it getting too clackity. "On the edge of clackity".

Of course you turned the engine by hand for a few revolutions to make sure the cam/crank is timed right and pistons aren't going to hit valves when you start it up.
