Brake Pads

I am replacing my rotors and brake pads since my last episode of my wheel falling off. My problem now is that the pads are two different sizes. One is long and narrow and the other si short and fat. Which pad goes on the inside of the rotor? I noticed that on the drivers side I put the longer one on the inside and on the passangers side I put the longer one on the outside. I have been driving with it this way for 2 years and just realized the mistake. Can someone help me out my car is sitting in the driveway waiting to be corrected.
