2003 Golf TDi Dropped dead could it be Relay 109

Post by wild3bill »

Last Saturday my 2003 Golf TDi died on the highway. Fuel system seems OK, I can draw fuel from the almost full tank, through the new fuel filter I pre-filled with fresh diesel. I've looked into the fuel shut-off solenoid valve which may be OK, but now my research has come up with a Relay 109 Problem as a possible culprit. Has any one heard of this?

Yes very possible, i believe it's power supply relay. Changed a few for sudden shut down/no starts.

I'm afraid to ask: Has the timing belt ever been replaced? What's your current odometer mileage?

Previous owner had Timing belt water pump and a few Misc items done about 80,300 miles as part of a $2 Grand routine maintenance By Dealer!

Golf has around 98,300 miles, but the trip resets to zero when the dash clock flashes to 12:00 on too cold morning starts

seems like an electrical problem to me, check battery connections, ground connections (never seen a good one on a VW unfortunately :( )

if you feel brave, you can repair your 109, pop it open carefully, then repair the PCB inside.
they are cheap anyway, I repaired mine and bought a new one just in case

Next fall I plan to switch my Mobil 1 from 5W40 to 0W40 (Also rated VW502.0 & VW505.0)by Thanksgiving and park overnight in tke shed. A New Battery in any event seems wise!
