messed up trans?

Post by JAMES ADKINS »

Well i really made things better on my 82 jetta . I had a simple speedo cable go bad so when i removed tranny end the gear fell off & into trans. Absolutely no way of retriving it. I am still driving it with no issues so far but i think i felt it move out of the way once to allow me to shift. Is this possible? The gears nylon so i know theres not a whole lot of chance in it gutting anything but i also know it aint doin it any good.Any comments? :x

I have had this happen in an 86 jetta, I had no choice but to drive it because I needed to get to work, it gave me no problems so I continued to drive it, and the car still drives around today without ever having an issue, over 20,000km later! so im not worried about it

Sometimes the gear can cause no problems what so ever and sometimes it can get lodged on funny places and make shifting difficult.

I sold a car to a guy in Minneapolis.
A month or so later trany fluid started pouring from the clutch area.
Fresh clutch and new seals in there so I didn't know what was happening.
Took the trip up to help him remove the trany.
There was a big hole in it.
I brought him up another 4-speed (GP, not some lame GC) and installed it. The clutch slipped but eventually burnt off and held good.

I pulled that trany apart and didn't see any problem,..
other than the messed-up speedo gear inside.
I think it was used to punch the hole,..
during the fluid's daring and successful escape attempt. :)
Once again feeling the earth under it's feet.
