what would you perfer 1.6 turbo or 1.9 non turbo??

if you had your pick of the two,power-longtivity-fuel mileage.What would be your pick and why??

1.6TD. No issues with the crank pulley, able to rev higher, easier to find parts, cheaper, and bolts in with no modifications. People have gotten 1.6TDs to make huge amounts of power. Both will last forever if taken care of, but the 1.9 has the crank pulley thing and if that isn't upgraded it can work loose and slip the belt, then the engine is pretty much toast.

I agree with this theory. Each should last the same time given the same maintenance and overall, the 1.6TD is cheaper to fix than the 1.9.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I'd go 1.6TD,..
I'm familiar with them,
they have plenty of power for me,
Parts are easier/cheaper to get.

They use less fuel.
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.
2003 TDI wagon
2000 TDI Jetta.

I´d prefer the 1.9D :lol:

Great low end power and mileage and no waiting for the turbo to spool up.
Of course this depends on what car you´ll be putting the engine in and what type of ride you´re after.

I'd vastly prefer the 1.6TD. The only reason I'd have interest in the 1.9D is to hang a turbo on it. With a VNT turbo there's almost no wait for the turbo to spool.

I don´t know if the OP was talking about modded engines or not, but a stock 1.6 with a T3 or a K24 does need quite a lot of revs before it spools up.

If it´s a question of modded engines I´d still take the 1.9 but with a turbo of course.
IMHO the greater low end torque makes all the difference for a daily driver.

Yeah, comparing a 1.9 without a turbo to a 1.6 with a turbo is kinda tying one hand behind its back... diesels lend themselves so gracefully to turbos it's almost a crime not to.

My bro has the 2.4 5-cylinder NA engine (basically a 1.9 NA with an extra cylinder) and he'd definately take the 1.6 TD over a 2.4 NA.
