Race stuck on the hub

Post by MizPahPAH »

I am in the process of redoing the front end Struts Axles Bearings

One came apart ok the other the outer race is stuck on the hub.

heated it up a bit but then stopped and figured I'd pose the question to you all.

should I cut / chisel it off

or try to make somthing to slide under the grooves and press it off

or something else any help would be great!

bearings and hubs are in the freezer

Cut with a dremel tool two sides as deep as I dare then drove a screw driver down into the deepest grove that popped that side and it slipped right off.

Now what temp to bake the spindles

2 3 or 400 degrees?

I cut mine, not all the way thru though, and used a punch to break it. A chisel will do the trick too, maybe even better than a punch.

Oh, you posted a reply while I was typing :)
I only had a heat gun and it was just hot enough to get the new bearing in so maybe around 200-250C whatever that is in Fahrenheits.

Use cold gas... like what is it? Butane.... or what I use is the liquid air upside down. Spray the liquid on the race and it will shrink I promise.

Heating the race makes it expand and stick more.

Don't use a chisel or a punch. Use something that is tough and round as a punch (pipe, socket) .... something that fits in and rests on the race........hit with mallet.

Use Mapp gas heat it up really hot use a cutoff saw to cut a deep groove uin it then chisel in half and remove. You will see this happen alot especially with the newer stuff like Passat Audi etc.

MizPahPAH and ALL : After using many different way's , the best by far ia a welder AC or DC and a carbon rod . A Battery will work or a simple Buzzbox. I am doing one next week-end.
