Ok. 4 years later.
I ended up cutting out that shorty flex joint and putting in a 6" flex in its place. I didn't have access to welding gear so I clamped it in and it seemed good until yesterday while I was under the van I saw a crack on that first 180 bend. I'm going to weld it up for now but really the whole thing needs a rethink.
It always cracks in the same spot, in the first 180 after it comes off the turbo. Some people have suggested supporting it there. Any ideas how?
Is the stainless stronger/less prone to cracking?
I've had it supported on the engine, on the body and it just seems a matter of (little) time before it fails.

Got a picture.
There are several threaded holes on the back of the block.
The 80 and earlier rabbits used some of them to support the exhaust.
