7mm Fuel Hose Recommendations

Post by tollertdi »

Have an '83 Rabbit. Want to replace both fuel hoses at the tank (both in and out hoses). Did some research and am not coming up with something that I feel comfortable with. Original is 7mm braided, but don't know the pressure rating?? Should I make sure it's FI hose? Do I have to make sure it's rated for diesel? Really want to stay with 7mm because 5/16 doesn't fit right (too big).

I thought the metal fuel lines were 8mm/5/16"
If they are 7mm; 1/4" hose should fit.

There is a tapered hose coming off the tank, for the fuel supply.
That's the hard oen to figure out but you haven't even mentioned it yet, ha.

You don't mention whether this is for a diesel or gas installation. If for diesel, the standard fuel hose will work fine. If it's gas, you'll need the fuel injection hoses to match the fuel injection system on the car (unless it's carb). If your running a really long run (back of car to front), the added thickness and wall strength of the FI hose is added security. Gas or diesel, works fine in the fuel rated hose.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

Sorry, '83 Rabbit Diesel. Never read anything about a tapered fuel line. Any details would be appreciated. They look the same on both ends.

From my looking around, 7mm seems to be the size. But is it supposed to be 8mm?

Wow. Just found this jewel.

So it's some kind of custom hose. Got the tank drained, so I'll mic the metal lines and find out what's really going on here.

I think the tank fitting is 12mm,..
maybe 11mm but they don't make 7/16" fuel line.
Sorry it's been awhile.

I see those hoses on ebay from time to time so I know they are available somewhere. No idea whether the ones on ebay are any good or not. Maybe our forum owner Jack has them or has a reliable source. I would not want to have to change them often so get a good one.

If you even have a passing interest in alternative fuels, now is the time to upgrade the hoses to something biodiesel compatable. I think grease works sell a complete viton conversion for around $100. You can find cheaper for sure, given some time and effort, but the two kits I've used were fairly painless.

I don't think the Greaseworks kit includes the tapered hose.

Been pondering a fix for this. A midline metal reducer should do the trick.
