stupid meaningless, ouch

Obviously 82vdub and I are on opposite sides of the fence on this subject. Don't get me wrong though, I agree with most of what 82vdub writes. I once said all the same things. I voted that way in more elections than I care to tell. I still believe many of the principles of the GOP. I'm still in favo...

But, if we check out www.snopes.com and type in David Letterman we will get an explaination that the true author of this piece is Craig R. Smith. He wrote it on 11-20-2006 in response to the American sentiment regarding hurricane Katrina. And, one other possible reason for so many Americans expressi...

Lots of talk about Duratherms. Anybody ever heard of a German brand named Meyle? Hope they're okay 'cause I bought four and plan to install them this Saturday. That is if the old ones check out as bad. Can I get all four glowplugs out and replaced without disturbing the IP? I'm going to wire up a fu...

automatic

In reading this thread and other similar ones I get the impression the VW automatic trans set-up is not so good. Applies to diesel and gas engine cars. My main concern is that it creates a condition where the engine turns very high RPMs at highway speeds as having only 3 speeds. I'm going to buy a 8...

I installed a 1.6 diesel into a 1989 Jetta which was originally a gasser. I hooked up the gasser speedo cable into the the diesel trans no problem. If the speedo is off it's by a negligible amount Ed

All done! I purchased the Inner Tie Rod tool from Harbor Freight and it made all the difference in the world. I cut off the outer end of the original tie rod as suggested by tylernt, slipped on the tool and loosened the lock nut. Re-assembly was easy other than a little struggle with the boot. After...

Harbor Freight in the US offers a tie rod removal and installation tool. It's the pipe-like tool w/ crows feet adaptors that slide into it and it's about $50.00. There is a retail store reasonably close to where I work. They caution it is not for use on Saginaw type rack and pinion steering. What ki...

and then the new one I buy could be an adjustable/removable outer end tie rod; bet that would work. Guess those are available for mine. Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something on this tie bar tool. Seems like the hollow pipe tool won't slide over the outboard end unless it is a removable end. Mind is fixed. Now what? Maybe I should look at open-end wrench ends that fit a ratchet wrench and extensions. If I can get a couple of these in the corre...

I'm back at it on this steering shake. Back in June I swapped out tires and wheels for that other set I had. No significant change, still the back and forth shake in the steering wheel as before. I just let it go for the summer but now as it's getting worse I got back into the project today. I found...

Okay lots of good ideas. I have a set of aluminum wheels with tires and will install those to see what happens. Start with the easiest I guess. I bet getting a front end alignment might be a real good idea because then an expert looks at the front end parts. I especially heard the idea about control...

Steering wheel vibration shaking

I did a search through the previous topics on this without much success. The steering wheel on my '89 Jetta shakes when I decelerate and when I change lanes on the highway (70mph). It does it everytime and has only developed over about the last two months. When lane changing it happens only when goi...

My '89 Jetta has a similar but different problem with the turn signals. The right ones blink at a speed I would consider normal. The left set blink at an accelerated rate like twice as fast. Looked to see that all the bulbs are working and they are. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Oil is kinda close to the subject of filters. I wonder how good is the NAPA 15w-40 for diesels.

Found out the hard way that when the fuel filter gets plugged up the engine stops running. Not fun sitting along the expressway when the outside temperature is 19F. If a vacuum gauge will help me avoid this surprise in the future..... well, I'm going to try to rig one up.
