I'd be inclined to check for ring / bore wear (replace/hone as required), main/rod bearings if needed, test/replace the glowplugs (much easier to replace with the head on a bench !). AAZ metal head gasket, and if you're feeling really generous treat your engine to a new 36mm oil pump. And, just for ...

Jeepers... I've been avoiding this thread because I thought it was the usual naughty spam... nice work on the tires. Care to hire your helper out ?? Between my two Jettas with summers and winters I've got 16 rims.

While we're on the subject of pump leaks and "magic part numbers" does anyone know the part number for the throttle bushing on the 1.6TD pump ?? My shop won't order it until I measure the height and I want to have the part on hand before I tear into it.

Another thought... did you roll the car, even a little, while it didn't have an axle ?? The bearings are extremely fragile without support and can evidently be toasted even with a very short trip in the garage.

Doesn't sound like it but I thought I'd ask...

I suppose one thought might be that your valve cover is permanently warped... it can happen pretty easily if someone doesn't snug it down in sequence or overtightens one side to get rid of a leak. The rubber gasket is a huge step forward... might want to use a straightedge to see if the cover is str...

Excellent DIY.... very nicely done, and the pictures are great. Before long we'll have the entire Bentley covered here. The only thing I do (slightly) differently is that I remove the upper ball joint bolt rather than the three ball joint mounting bolts... one bolt rather than three and that particu...

Pretty sure the Bentley says 650 cca for A1/A2 diesels... and that's what VW people has sold me the last 3 times I've bought diesel batteries. And, I've started my diesel pickup at -40F with 650 cca. My opinion: a 800 cca battery isn't going to start your diesel any better or worse that a 650 cca ba...

This guy: http://www.digitaldownpour.com/blog

has a post about a leaking dipstick holder that he eventually traced back to inferior replacement parts from a particular manufacturer.. if you still can't solve it perhaps try a different brand ??

Yup... I see the fuel hose union now.... 99.9% chance this is exactly what happened... a previous owner removed the water seperator, bypassed the fuel line, and left the sensor dangling. Road water, particularly if it has any salt content, would cause the exposed sensor to at least partially trigger.

Those definitely look like sensor probes of some kind (strangely they look like the sensor that monitors coolant level)... I've never had my water separator apart so I don't know if that's what the sensor looks like, but you've definitely described the spot it usually lives. Can you follow the fuel ...

Hey duffer:

Nah....no offence... it's all good. My original post was a bit pro-Bentley and you were correct to remind everyone that the people on this forum have taken VWs places the designers never ever intended... and all for the better.

I've learned tons from them myself. :D
