120k on 1.6TD motor .... burns 250ml / 5000 km 54.9 MPG highway (canadian gal) 46.3 MPG in town


thank you Hagar for the low side internal pressures .. it was at 23 PSI and I was getting 46MPG Highway ... bumped it up to 35 PSI and I'm almost at 55 MPG.

could have been a bit of air in the injector line..... compresses and does not open the injector .... sounds like a main bearing / bad rod knock ... loud! till the air works out and the injector opens properly ... about 3 -5 minutes of idling.

if its a leaking seal, use the LUCAS (thickens the oil) but may cause your belts to slip because of the greater resistance when cold.

if its a line, replace it

MK2 styles ( R-pack inside the blower ) are super easy to fix ... remove the motor, snap out the resistor pack , then look for the small bullet shaped thing at the top of the unit ... this is a thermal fuse ... just jumper it ( solder a wire across the 2 leads or wrap a wire around them to by pass t...

the diesels usually use the 90 mm units

gassers used both but usually the 100mm from 1988 and upto 1992

but as usual , someone may have swapped bearing hub assemblies and tranny flanges to use the larger units (guilty as charged)

hmmm ,,,, so the collar adjusts, closing the spill port, when we want more power ... and the govenor opens the spill port to reduce power when we cruise or slow down ..... its the MAIN reason for our milage figures ( when all the rest are tuned in .. timing / advance , etc) it must adjust so we only...

balance pistons by weighing all individually ( after cleaning and no rings ) take the lightest and put aside ( your reference) then take each other piston and grind away the bottom of the skits (by the wristpins) till you are within spec of your reference piston... smooth out any burrs ..... con rod...

4 new glow plugs ? did you check the GP fuse ? they tend to blow if old and only had a "light " load on them ( only 1 plug working)... just something else to check ....

Don't TDIs have a glow plug in the coolant flange to help speed engine warmup?
and to give heat to the cabin while the motor warms up

the coolant also prevents them from getting too hot and burning out.

you should be running 15W40 for year round or straight 40 for summer .... anything lighter is too thin.
