Re: Idle speed way too high
Eh, I wouldn't dwell on the oil pressure too much. These engines didn't typically have an oil pressure gauge from the factory. It was just meant to be whatever it was, so long as the warning light was out.

Re: Can old GTI rabbits be converted to TDIs?
GTI's were not turbo. TDI's aren't 1.6L, they're computer controlled 1.9L diesels, as I understand it. To swap a turbo onto a 1.6L, you just need an appropriately sized turbo and a manifold to bolt it to (they're on eBay for dirt cheap). To swap an actual TDI motor into an old GTI, you'll pretty muc...

The fuel mileage will suffer because of that automatic. Kind of ominous to see the timing belt removed and the valve cover still fully bolted down. I'd just assume the valves are bent.
Great looking Rabbit.

I need a baffle plate to go inside my valve cover on my '82 1.6L diesel motor.

Better than mine, mine never reads empty. I just use it as a rough idea, and go on mileage..

Re: non-starting issues -- odd symptoms
I wouldn't think that stuff could hold up. It gets crazy stiff below room temp, and crazy soft above room temp. It kinks easily, and under any kind of vacuum it will collapse in on itself. I can't imagine that's the vinyl he meant, but it does fit what he said "cheap vinyl lines".. I've be...

Yeah, if the battery dips below 12v anytime other than cranking, it's at the very least fully discharged.

That's the bolt you remove to screw in the dial gauge to set the base timing. I do believe it has either a rubber o-ring or a copper crush washer.

Welcome to the forum. I have a similar rear hatch leak. Coming in from the top? I've been meaning to look into mine and figure it out, but since it's summer (more or less) around here, I haven't yet. I figured I'd just have to buy a new seal.

WTB: 1.6L IDI turbo exhaust manifold
I'd like to turbo my Wabbit, maybe finally cure the smoking problem once and for all. So I'm looking for a turbo exhaust manifold that'll bolt up to this engine. (82 1.6L diesel motor). Or if you can point me to a source to buy one (aftermarket that's a known good one? I see some on eBay, but can't ...

Nothing short of pure stainless steel or carbon fiber will save a car in the rust belt. It's a real shame.

4 gauge is way too thin for that long of a run. 4 gauge is about right inside the engine bay on it's normal 2 foot run.

Re: Bad Wabbit
Thursday evening, I decided it'd be a good idea to take the grinder to a cancerous rusty spot on my windshield pillar, so that I could put some rust treatment on it. http://www.neonsquirt.com/rusthole/before.jpg As I said, I took a grinder that normally only removes the paint, and hit some cancer sp...
