This happened to me one winter during a snow storm, 400km from home... I suspected that my fuel filter had gelled so I took it off and put in on the engine to warm up, then the car started up nicely and drove for 5min and it started to slow down again. To make a long story about fault finding in a s...

My current mileage number is based on 35000km of mixed driving... Clearly you need to make longer runs if you can go from 50mpg to 75mpg without any changes, that huge improvement is not realistic. And to leap towards 100mpg as the next step is not possible in a Golf 1.6D. Or TD for that matter. I'm...

What changes did you do to the car between the 50mpg run and the 75mpg run?
That's a 50% increase

I think you should do longer runs to get a more realistic number, in a long enough down hill you could coast the 4 miles and get awesome mileage...

59mpg IMP 50 yankee 4.6L/100km (the european way) 0.46L/10km (the Swedish way) Hmm, a world wide standard would be nice  Btw, I have run my Golf TDI as low as 4.7L/100km, very close to hagars but that was calculated over 890km when I did a trip up north. Drove 110-120km/h most of the time, had...

Yes, it does affect the end of the duration of the injection in exactly the same manner as pressing the pedal further or less far. Timing itself is set by the start of injection timing, which remains constant for a given rpm. If the max fuel is adjusted to the point that the engine smokes with the ...

We are way off topic now but I'd like to add my point of view in the VW Jon vs libbybaba battle  Doesn't the max fuel increase the amount of fuel by increasing the duration of the fuel stroke (to the high pressure head)? IIRC Bosch IP's add the fuel to the end of the injection stroke which mean...

I think you can feel and hear when the timing is right, or at least in the ball park. If you have a dial gauge you can set it with that and set it slightly more advanced than the specified (which I've forgotten). At least I think they run better slightly advanced, someone, maybe Libbybaba, had a the...

It doesn't have to leak a lot to make the fuel drain from the pump, all it needs is a hole for air to enter and the fuel will be siphoned towards the tank.
Look for damp spots on the IP and around the small rubber lines between the injectors.

Check the seals in the IP, especially the one at the sprocket end.

I agree, 12A calls for a relay. I'll measure mine too and post the results some day. I would have thought it only pulls 1-3A :?

Man it's hot outside right now, 28C in the shade, I grew up in northern Sweden and like the winters better. I'll never get used to the hottest summers days...

Two days later it still works! Fires up happily every time, glad to have it going again, I'd like to get it to 400k km, it's at 380k now :D It still drops to about 11V with IGN on which probably is quite normal. If I measure the voltage over the battery with the engine running I get about 13.6V, kin...

Look for poor grounds/connections. You Do Not have a short circuit!!! If you had a short circuit causing that kind of voltage drop with a good battery i guarantee you'd be seeing smoke if the fuses failed to do their job. This answer really got me thinking last night, today I have gone through most...

Hagar, I didn't realize I did not test the battery as per your recommendation. Can't you just write in plain english what you want me to test? I believe I understand english good enough to follow your instructions if you just write them down and post them, in a few complete sentences. Anyone else wi...
