AMC made aftermarket heads for type 2 aircooled motors. In the aircooled community AMC stands for Always Many Cracks. :D

Not saying this is the same for their diesel heads but the aircooled ones are pure crap.

Re: glowplug life

The glow plugs in my 81 caddy have been in it since 1985 if that helps. i think glowplugs are like drive belts. you dont think about them untill they quit working. BTW I think the service interval on the injectors is 60,000miles, but with clean fuel and correct fuel pressure i am pretty sure you ca...

A couple of thoughts. A Scotch Brite pad is a little course for that application and you may have scored the shaft. I would only clean it with a rag and solvent, maybe 600 grit paper if it looked like it had lite surface oxidation. Did you lube the snot out of the seal and shaft with motor oil when ...

I too would recommend making sure all of your grounds are good by cleaning all connections and replacing any crusty looking connections and wires. That alone will cure 90% of the electrical bugaboos in older VW's.

I noticed the same thing with my cheap Chinese injectors.
They ran pretty well at first but after a few hundred miles they ran even better.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the pump is pressurized internally with fuel and the main seal is keeping this fuel in under that pressure.

It is really not difficult to disassemble a strut but you darn well had better use spring compressors. The spring in under considerable compression and WILL take your face off if the bolts are just undone. A proper tool is actually pretty cheap... http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=firefo...

One for sure way to eliminate the fuel cut solenoid as the problem it to remove it and take out the plunger and spring, then re-install it.
If you still have no fuel that is not the problem.

Don't want to hijack the thread but I have a possibly related question. When I lite off my 81 Caddy the alt light stays on for a short while after start up. Based on info picked up here I have already added a ground strap to the alt but this made no difference. I've checked the battery. It is in go...
