Ironically it's the V71 service manual I have too.

Used to work in a pit where they had V-12's in the rock trucks. Unforgettable noise as the throttle is cracked open. Can't imagine a V-16. I think they use them in boats also.

If it's at idle only, maybe an injector. We had our 1.6 make a similar sound and it was an injector. Engine looped at idle, sounded like whack, whack, whack...cracked an injector line to find it. Belts can make some funny noises too.Phil
