Re: Tranny not engaging gears

I tried what you suggested and it worked! I even tested each gear by turning the engine over by hand. Seems fine now. The gear shift feels a little sloppier and in a different place, but I'm sure alignment is not the same as before, since i replaced two original, misshapen motor mounts with new ones...

Tranny not engaging gears

First mistake was not putting my tranny in neutral before I pulled the engine. Now that it's back in with a new clutch and seals, and with the linkage connected exactly how it was before, I can't seem to get any normal movement out of the shifter. I welcome any advice on troubleshooting this. I'll l...

Re: NA --> ECO Conversion + Turbo Rebuild Kit

Turbo Diagnostics: An unfortunate tale I had my engine/tranny hanging from the hoist ready to drop in, and the last thing I had to do was bleed oil through the turbo bearings. I did this by sucking oil from a container into the oil inlet, using a mityvac pump on the drain line of the turbo. I wasn'...

Re: 85 Golf engine and turbo

You're a machine! Nice to see the progress you're making... gathering parts certainly causes projects like these to take forever. I finally dropped my engine in today after four months of building - couldn't be happier about potentially driving her around in a few days! Where will you get an interco...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress

Engine fully built up, tranny attached, hanging from the hoist, ready to drop into the compartment. Just a few last minute calls for tips... - What is the best oil to use on initial break-in during the summer? An older Autozone clerk suggested SAE30 - he said he's rebuilt upwards of 50 rabbit diesel...

Re: NA --> ECO Conversion + Turbo Rebuild Kit

I'm fixin' to add the turbo components to my engine, but am feeling more and more weary of the pressures that turbos can put on these cars. Any idea what kind of temps I'll be sending out the exhaust with this eco-turbo add-on? I'm adding a boost gauge, but the EGT gauge seems cost-prohibitive. I co...

Re: What's involved in a turbo upgrade?

Yeah these NA diesels (naturally aspirated) are supplied with unlimited air into the cylinder, which is one of the things that makes them intrinsically different than gassers.

I'd add boost and egt gauges if you want to be extra careful. These 1.6 NA engines aren't made for turbos.

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress

The hole in the head is oddly shaped, bulbous and triangular. And there wasn't quite enough space on the gasket or block to seal the hole. I ended up filling the hole with successive fillings of jb weld - will post pictures later - and it seemed to do the trick. Got the head bolted on and now I'm on...

Re: Re-Ring/Rebuild Project Under way. Pics + Progress

The bottom end is built up. The head gasket has two coats of spray copper on each side and the deck is clean, ready for the head to bolt down. Now I'm fixing to fill the hole in my head that I've been worried about for a while... If I don't do this then coolant will leak out where the plug is in the...

Re: What a day...

I had a heck of a time doing all my own front end steering/suspension/axle work. Ordering the parts through local big box vendors ended up being a mistake. I got wrong ball joints, wrong tie rod boots, and a few other bogus parts. Nowadays I try and only order parts through VW parts distributors, li...

Re: vo control system

I don't have injection line heaters. I've never seen this in use before. I use the hose-in-a-hose method for heating the fuel send, which delivers hot fuel to the engine compartment. My in-tank heater is aluminum tubing coiled up in the tank, with hot coolant flowing through it. I've thought about a...

Re: vo control system

Ya know, I've never used the digital automated switching system, mainly because I've only been able to afford the on/off switches. So, I'm not of much help as far as the vo control, but I can say those fuel tank switching solenoids in the second picture are just like the ones I have. Used for switch...

I haven't installed my timing belt or set timing yet, but I did already make the necessary locking tools, based on Vincent's techniques/suggestions:

Re: strut mounts jetta gl 1.6l

When I put new strut mounts/bearings on mine, there was still a bit of play. It felt a lot tighter, but not only three months later did I start to hear knocking and feel a lot more looseness... the rubber on the mounts was also cracked and looked bad already. So, I'd say the play in the column is no...
